Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...and those of us holding the mascara wand.

After two decades of covering the beauty industry, I've come to learn what makes it so alluring. Finding the perfect shade of makeup to match your skin tone, adding a swipe of eyeliner to give your tired eyes a lift, discovering an innovative new product line, or indulging in a totally luxurious spa treatment. My experiences have been documented in magazines, newspapers and websites worldwide. I've tested newly formulated products in the lab, explored hair removal options, shopped for lipstick, added shine to my hair and succumbed to massage marathons--all in the name of beauty. I've written press releases, hosted makeover events and co-authored a Do-It-Yourself Beauty book (Alloy). On this blog, I write about products and services that I come across every day as well as those that have been provided by publicists or the companies that make them. Either way, I write what I think. I hope to share some of my insights--and bring you the latest, greatest beauty news right here. Join me in the quest to find all things pretty.

Try the Elemis Tri-Enzyme Resurfacing Serum Facial: Your Face Will Thank You

You can make an appointment for a facial...or you can try the Elemis Tri-Enzyme Resurfacing Serum, available at Bliss Spa. Is it worth the $180? If you want a luxurious skin salvaging treatment and you haven't given your skin the attention it deserves lately, you might say yes. If you can't fathom spending that kind of cash on any sort of beauty treatment, try it at home with the products listed below. Either way, it's a great way to smooth, refine and rejuvenate your skin.

The Tri-Enzyme Resurfacing Serum is a clinically proven gentle facial resurfacing serum that has a non-abrasive peeling action that smoothes the skin's surface by up to 91%* (Independent Clinical Trials 2006). As natural cell renewal is stimulated, imperfections appear diminished and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles are reduced.

I was fortunate enough to have it professionally administered by the expert staff at Bliss 49, tucked away in the W Hotel on Lexington Avenue. After slipping into a luxurious spa robe and unwinding in the relaxation room, an esthetician escorted me into a private room where my facial began. A medley of intoxicating essential oil treatments, soothing collagen serums, resurfacing peels, and moisturizing masks ensued while steaming hot towel applications and scalp, hand and foot massages were administered in between. Each Elemis product smelled better than the one before--if you like that aromatherapy/essential oil/ah-spa scent. The best part: When the facial was completed, I felt well-rested and looked it too. My skin felt smooth and rejuvenated, not raw or red like the end result of other resurfacing treatments.

To re-create the Tri-Enzyme Resurfacing Facial at home, try these Elemis products:

breakthrough beauty: age eraser

prettyisprettydoes
gives you
an exclusive preview
of FOX TV's Good Day Dallas
Breakthrough Beauty feature...
as reported by Susan Redstone

I loved being 17. High school parties, boyfriends, never-ending summers...and great looking skin. Fast-forward a few years (ok, maybe more than a few) and I wish I could turn back the hands of time just a bit. Well, enough to erase some fine lines, crow's feet, age spots and other telltale signs of growing older. Seems like Maybelline New York has been reading my mind. The company's newly debuted Instant Age Rewind Collection, featuring The Eraser Treatment Makeup ($12.99), changes the concept of anti-aging for good. The Eraser is clinically proven to provide immediate results that reduce the signs of aging skin – going beyond covering and actually erasing. The micro-corrector sponge applicator gets into all of your skin's nooks and crannies, allowing coverage to reach fine lines and wrinkles so they can ultimately be erased. An advanced treatment formula provides perfecting coverage, instantly evening out skin tone, while blurring away imperfections and age spots for a more youthful, radiant finish. It contains the highly touted anti-aging ingredient, Goji berry, which features one of the highest concentrations of antioxidants ever, plus 19 amino acids, hundreds of times more Vitamin C per ounce than oranges, and four polysaccharides, which stimulate collagen production and help tighten and firm skin at the micro level. And they even remembered the sunscreen! SPF 18 protects skin from future damage so skin looks smoother and more radiant even without makeup. Just twist the product up into the sponge (just a small amount on the sponge will do) and apply to your skin. It's comfortable to wear and really blends in well. To find one of the 12 shades that suits your skin color (I like creamy natural), go to www.maybelline.com, then head to your local drug store to purchase.

get the point

It seems to be a trend--if you're a plastic surgeon, you have to have your own skin care line. Denver-based Plastic Surgeon Christine Rodgers is no exception, thanks to her newly launched skin care collection, En Pointe Skin Solutions--but she brings to the table her first-hand experience as a breast cancer survivor as well as a passionate ballet dancer. In fact, it was the physical and emotional healing benefits she experienced through practicing ballet that inspired the brand name which suggests enduring strength. En Pointe specifically addresses women's skin concerns such as fine lines, skin pigmentation, redness and irritation which Dr. Rodgers believes are the consequences of skin stressors like hormonal, environmental, physical, emotional and medical issues. So I set out to undo some 40+ years of stress I have already endured. After washing my face, I applied the Encore Renewal Serum ($85), designed to brighten, reduce pigmentation and minimize the appearance of age spots. Formulated with Dr. Rodgers' Bio-Energy Complex to smooth, hydrate and promote radiant skin, it smoothed on easily and absorbed quickly. I followed up with the Fouette Firming Moisturizer ($85), designed to deliver intense moisture, stimulate collagen production and protect against free radical damage. It felt thicker than I expected but absorbed just as readily, almost as if it was filling in my not-so-fine lines as I was applying it. I added a couple of dabs of the Pas de Trois Age Delay Eye Solution ($75) in an attempt to reduce puffiness, dark circles and wrinkles around my eyes, offering a more youthful appearance. All of the formulas felt smooth and creamy on my skin and had a subtle clean, natural scent. There's a cleanser, toner, and SPF too, as well as other nourishing treatments. As for the results, only time will tell. I'll have to keep you posted. But in the meantime, check out these innovative and therapeutic products on www.empoweryourskin.com.

best foot forward

Time was when pedicures were strictly meant for trying out the newest shade of polish. But lately things aren't all they were once cracked up to be. With every visit to the nail salon, I began to become a bigger fan of the razor blade and pumice stone--depending on these no-nonsense tools to scrape away the signs of ravaging my feet have endured. Not anymore. I just tried Barielle's new Heel and Callus Treatment Cream ($22) and I'm happy to say, I'm now well-heeled. Thanks to a high concentration of emollients and softening agents like vitamin E, Aloe Vera, Shea Butter, Soybean Oil and Stearic Acid, as well as marine-derived Sea Kelp Extract and Algae Extract, my feet have been magically moisturized. I apply the cream all over after a shower when it absorbs most readily and before I go to bed when it will have plenty of time to sink in. It smooths on easily and doesn't feel thick or heavy like other serious foot moisturizers. The result: Smoother, softer skin...and fewer trips to the salon. Look for it at select retailers or www.barielle.com this spring--just in time for sandal season.
