Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...and those of us holding the mascara wand.
After two decades of covering the beauty industry, I've come to learn what makes it so alluring. Finding the perfect shade of makeup to match your skin tone, adding a swipe of eyeliner to give your tired eyes a lift, discovering an innovative new product line, or indulging in a totally luxurious spa treatment. My experiences have been documented in magazines, newspapers and websites worldwide. I've tested newly formulated products in the lab, explored hair removal options, shopped for lipstick, added shine to my hair and succumbed to massage marathons--all in the name of beauty. I've written press releases, hosted makeover events and co-authored a Do-It-Yourself Beauty book (Alloy). On this blog, I write about products and services that I come across every day as well as those that have been provided by publicists or the companies that make them. Either way, I write what I think. I hope to share some of my insights--and bring you the latest, greatest beauty news right here. Join me in the quest to find all things pretty.

go for the bronze

I've been using my Clinique sunscreen religiously for a month now and I couldn't be happier. Clinique Sun New SPF 50 Face Cream ($17.50) and Spf 50 Body Cream ($20) with SolarSmart UVA/UVB advanced protection have won the Skin Cancer Foundation's Seal of Recommendation, thanks to their non-greasy formulas that are oil-free, water- and sweat-resistant, non-clogging and great for those with sensitive skin. I've even been carrying the New SPF 45 Targeted Protection Stick ($17.50) in my bag for areas I tend to forget like lips and under eyes. But now that the summer is coming to a close, I can't wait to switch to Clinique's Self Sun Face Tinted Lotion ($20) and Body Tinted Lotion ($20). The face lotion acts like a bronzer and makes you look tan as soon as you smooth it on, but will turn into a natural-looking self-tan in two to three hours. Watch your tan appear before your very eyes! The body lotion (I tried light/medium) works the same way--and the fact that you can see the color where you apply it helps you avoid an unnatural, streaky or splotchy look you can get from other self-tanners. Next on my list to try: The Body Airbrush Spray ($20), which offers natural-looking color similar to a professional airbrush tan. It dries in three to five minutes and color starts to emerge in under an hour. With skin color this warm and natural, I'm sure I'll barely notice the change of season... Go to www.clinique.com and choose the formula that's right for you. And don't forget your sunscreen; Self Sun doesn't have SPF which you'll still need this fall.

help for humidity

No matter what I do, some days I can't seem to get rid of this halo around my head. No, I'm no angel--it's just that this humidity is really getting to me--and my hair. I've tried smoothing products but I need something more. So I decided to try Ecru Sunlight Styling Spray ($22.95), designed for brilliant shine and brushable hold. The company's first-ever aerosol spray is loaded with proteins and vitamins to keep hair healthy while providing flexible hold. And it comes in a quick-dry formula so your hair doesn't feel wet or sticky after you spray it on. But the best news yet is that Sunlight Styling Spray is formulated to be used in the most extreme humid climates, leaving hair with incredible shine while protecting it from the sun and the environment. Granted, I'm still not moving to Florida but at least I've found something to keep my hair in check on sticky New York summer days. Also try Ecru Sunlight Finishing Spray Max for maximum hold, Silk Nourishing Spray, a weightless leave-in conditioner, and Volumizing Silk Mist for added volume and conditioning. Go to www.ecrunewyork.com to purchase any of these products.
miracle oil

Talk about the all-encompassing beauty product: Whether you want to minimize scars and stretch marks, add moisture, even skin tone, or even make your skin look a few years younger, Bio-Oil ($11.99 for 2 ounces, $19.99 for 4.2 ounces) is the answer. The advanced formula is a rapidly absorbing dry oil that targets all of the above without leaving skin feeling greasy. Just smooth some on your skin for a healthy dose of some of my favorite ingredients: vitamins A and E, calendula, lavender, rosemary oil and chamomile extract through PurCellin Oil. How it works: This unique oil creates a thin, non-greasy, protective layer on your skin to prevent dryness and guard against moisture loss while allowing skin to absorb all the vitamins and natural herbal ingredients and allowing skin to breathe. On a serious note, I have friends with stretch marks who have tried everything and swear by Bio-Oil to reduce the appearance of their unsightly lines. If you just want to glisten, add a few drops of Bio-Oil to your favorite body bronzer and smooth it over your skin. You'll get a sexy, summer shimmer. Pick up a bottle of Bio-Oil at Walmart, Target, Walgreens, CVS and other leading drugstores.

butter up!

Keep your gorgeous glow and your carefree mood even after summer days fade away--with LaLicious Body Butter ($24 for 8 ounces). It's a non-greasy, paraben-free body butter that nourishes and softens with Vitamin E, Almond Oil and a hint of aloe vera. It comes in yummy, fruitilicious scents like Island Guava, Coconut Cream, Tahitian Flower and Lily Mango. I tried the sweet-smelling Lily Mango after a shower and was instantly transported to my favorite Caribbean island for a few blissful minutes. The whipped texture left my skin feeling silky smooth, ultimately hydrated and luxuriously soft. Go to www.lalicious.com to see the entire product line.
